Lumson on all fronts
At the PCD trade show in Paris, Matteo Moretti, CEO of Lumson, demonstrated that his company is active on all fronts. Starting with ‘FREE’, a brand new metal-free pump that combines technical performance with environmental friendliness. The start of 2026 also brought good news for the Italian firm with the award of the ‘Platinum’ medal from EcoVadis, the leading organisation for assessing and monitoring CSR performance and the value chain, which is awarded to only one per cent of companies assessed worldwide. Not to mention the investments made in the Santa Maria di Sala factory in the Venice region, which make this site a true centre of excellence for the group in the manufacture of primary packaging. Finally, the icing on the cake is the partnership with Benefit Cosmetics for the bottle and pump of the new POREfessional foundation... And that’s not all! At a press conference, Matteo Moretti, as a member of the board of directors, also announced the official creation of the Lombardy Cosmetics Cluster, which brings together universities, companies and innovation stakeholders with the aim of strengthening the innovation capacity of the Lombardy economic system. Explanations…
What makes this new ‘Free’ pump so special?
Matteo Moretti: At the heart of ‘FREE’ is an innovative, proven and reliable material from cutting-edge fields such as aerospace and medicine. After five years of research, our teams have adapted this polymer to perfectly meet the needs of the beauty industry: durable, lightweight, flexible and capable of withstanding mechanical, thermal and chemical stresses.
Its performance speaks for itself:
– Reliable and consistent precision, even over the long term
– Performance equivalent to that of metal spring pumps
– Effortless comfort.
This pump is available in atmospheric and airless versions with a 24/410 neck. ‘FREE’ has already obtained RecyClass certification, proof of our unwavering commitment to reducing our environmental impact (technological approval for full compatibility with the PP recycling stream. Compatibility letter/Class for airless and atmospheric versions).
The second source of satisfaction is the Platinum medal awarded by EcoVadis!
Matteo Moretti: This medal is the result of a journey that began in 2020, marked by key milestones and the addition of new achievements in 2025: ISO 27001 certification (international standard for information security management systems - ISMS) and ISO 37001 certification (international standard for anti-bribery management systems - ABMS). The former enables organisations to protect sensitive data (confidentiality, integrity and availability of information) through a risk-based management approach and security controls, while the latter facilitates the prevention, detection and response to corruption by promoting a culture of integrity and transparency and supporting compliance with anti-corruption laws.
These are voluntary standards that further strengthen our commitment to ethical and transparent business practices.
This recognition means that we are reaffirming our commitment to integrating and promoting sustainable practices. It is about positioning ourselves among the most virtuous companies in the world. Platinum certification attests to the maturity of ESG processes integrated into corporate governance and industrial strategies. These processes include: designing packaging solutions that comply with the principles of recyclability and the circular economy; optimising production processes with a focus on energy efficiency and waste reduction; selecting and engaging suppliers based on environmental, ethical and social responsibility criteria; and continuously monitoring performance using quantitative and qualitative indicators.
This new assessment, which highlighted improvements in all areas, is based on documented evidence, measurable key performance indicators and formalised company policies, with a particular focus on:
– environmental management systems and impact reduction (energy, emissions, materials);
– health and safety, training and human resources protection;
– business integrity, compliance and ethical practices;
– responsible supply chain management and ESG criteria applied to suppliers.
This recognition is not only formal, it also represents a tool for transparency and reliability for cosmetics brands that are increasingly turning to manufacturing partners with the tools to support real and measurable ESG objectives.
Another important piece of information is the investments made in your factory in Santa Maria di Sala in the Venice region, which make this site a true centre of excellence for your group in terms of primary packaging manufacturing.
Matteo Moretti: Our Lumson Venice factory, which we acquired about fifteen years ago, was actually established in the 1950s. Today, it is at the cutting edge of technology in the field of packaging for cosmetic products. It has become a true centre of excellence within our group. Organised in accordance with GMP standards, the site covers an area of 7,000 m2. It has a wide range of technologies at its disposal, including high-speed extrusion blow moulding, injection moulding and stretch blow moulding machines designed to meet the needs of the skincare, haircare, personal care, suncare and bodycare sectors. We work with a wide variety of materials and provide solutions that are both versatile and sustainable: PE and PCR-PE bottles, PETG and rPETG, PP, PE/PP soft touch, as well as EVOH and PA/LDPE pouches. In addition, rPET PET bottles (made with up to 70% PCR) and 100% PCR rPET solutions.
Among the site’s flagship services, the development of customised packaging solutions plays a central role. The entire process, from design to the creation of exclusive moulds and aesthetic enhancement, is carried out in-house and draws on a wide range of decoration technologies. Even standard items can be customised in-house to express a distinctive identity. Multiple techniques are available, from hot stamping to screen printing. Given the wide range of shapes, materials and capacities available (from 10 ml to 1,000 ml), each choice can be complemented by a selection from an extensive catalogue of atmospheric and airless pumps, droppers, caps and numerous accessories, all manufactured by Lumson.
A word about this whole series of developments with the Benefit Cosmetics Group...
Matteo Moretti: POREfessional mattifying and blurring foundation is the latest foundation from Benefit Cosmetics, founded by Jean and Joane Ford in 1976 and now part of the LVMH group. Developed to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, smooth skin texture and resist clumping and smudging, this transfer-proof foundation, available in 40 shades, lets the skin breathe while providing a flawless finish, even on the busiest days. Formulated with rosehip extract and glycerine, enriched with niacinamide (vitamin B3) to help refine the appearance of pores and complexion, this product deeply hydrates and visibly improves skin quality day after day. Behind this foundation, which instantly went viral, lies an Italian touch: the bottle and pump we created. For this foundation, Benefit chose the 30 ml frosted Unique bottle with a fully rounded base and a 20/400 neck, which it paired with the AB226 pump with a PEARL 175 actuator in white to ensure easy and precise application. This bottle, with its elegant silhouette and clean lines, catches the eye with its soft curves that make it instantly recognisable and soothing to the touch. The UV screen printing in white and fuchsia adds a vibrant, high-end touch that perfectly matches Benefit’s friendly and playful aesthetic. The brand’s iconography is reflected in the decoration, which references the range’s mission: to minimise imperfections and smooth pores, the very essence of the POREfessional range. The dynamic, easy-to-read lettering amplifies the brand’s distinctive ‘playful yet professional’ tone. This solution chosen by Benefit Cosmetics is part of a wide range of makeup packaging we have developed: a portfolio that includes 45 glass bottles and 7 glass jars ranging from 5 to 40 ml, in three main shapes:
· Round: timeless cylindrical; versatile and perfect for showcasing any formula
· Square: elegant and sophisticated lines; ideal for a distinctive design
· Special: unique silhouettes, from soft curves to elliptical lines, for products with a strong personality
The range is completed by lipsticks, glosses and bottles that meet all the needs of the make-up sector.
Creation of the Lombardy Cosmetics Cluster: Lumson among the founding members
On 15 December, the Lombardy Cosmetics Cluster was officially created. The association brings together universities, companies and players in the field of innovation with the aim of strengthening the innovation capacity of the Lombardy economic system.
The Cluster will strengthen the positioning of the cosmetics sector at European level, alongside established organisations such as Cosmetic Valley and Beauty Cluster Barcelona. Its founding members include four universities (Politecnico di Milano, University of Milan, University of Milano-Bicocca, University of Pavia), REI – Reindustria Innovazione, and three leading companies in the cosmetics sector: Lumson, Ancorotti Cosmetics and REGI + Omnicos.
‘The recognition of the Cluster,’ says Matteo Moretti, "represents an important step for all companies in the Lombardy cosmetics district. Its strategic value goes beyond national borders and takes on an international dimension: thanks to the Cluster, not only are the expertise, quality and innovative capabilities of Italian companies officially recognised, but the association will also be able to act as an ambassador for Made in Italy around the world. This is a powerful and valuable driver for the entire Lombardy ecosystem."
Operating across the entire cosmetics value chain, the Cluster will be responsible for supporting the definition and implementation of the smart specialisation strategy, mapping and developing skills, facilitating technology transfer and improving research results, supporting the development of regional, national and European calls for proposals, promoting internationalisation and participation in European networks and partnerships, and involving the wider community.
